Mike Von Erich, born Michael Brett Adkisson on February 15, 1964, was a member of the famed Von Erich wrestling family. He was initially not involved in professional wrestling; instead, he was interested in becoming a cameraman. However, after the deaths of his brothers David and Kerry, he was pressured into joining the family business.
He made his wrestling debut in 1985, despite having very limited training compared to his brothers. He was billed as a powerful and athletic wrestler, but in reality, his inexperience was evident. He notably held the World Class Six-Man Tag Team Championship with his brothers.
Tragically, Mike's wrestling career was cut short due to toxic shock syndrome (TSS) which he contracted after shoulder surgery in 1987. The illness severely weakened him and he never fully recovered. His physical condition greatly deteriorated.
Mike Von Erich died on April 12, 1987, at the age of 23. His death, attributed to an overdose of Placidyl, was yet another tragedy in the string of misfortunes that plagued the Von Erich family, contributing to what many considered the "Von Erich curse."
